2016 Fiscal Year United Way of Broward County continued their commitment to support the second year of APP-titude two-year Internship for 70 Broward County High School students where interns learn coding, develop Apps for Android, receive college credit from FAU, and explore engineering and computer science careers. John H. Rau Space Education Fund of Community Foundation of Broward supported the Karman Line: A Comprehensive Learning Initiative in Space Science. Activities included space camp with a field trip to Kennedy Space Center, space films and programs for museum visitors and a new portable planetarium. American Express provided funds to improve our volunteer program that has engaged 345 people who have served more than 23,317 hours. The Leo Goodwin Foundation created a fund to provide free admission to the museum for several non-profit organizations that serve children. A.D. Henderson provided support for Family Science in partnership with the Broward County Head Start Program for children that included a workshop for parents and guardians. The Community Foundation of Broward, with support from the Anna Bloeser Fund and the Mary N. Porter Community Impact Fund, continued to fund the Museum’s program with Crystal Lakes Middle School, an initiative to increase high school graduation through STEM programing. A Lorraine Thomas grant provided funds that enabled the Museum to serve special needs children at Camp DMC. The Nancy Bryant and Jerry Taylor Foundation funded a pilot Aviation Academy Internship for 27 high school students. JetBlue Airways supported the program with a behind-the-scenes tour of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Interns also toured Sikorsky Development Flight Center and Goodyear Blimp Operations Base, enjoyed aviation industry speakers and participated in a drone challenge. GKS Science in the Summer program continued in 2016 serving three youth community centers with hands-on science lessons in the City of Hallandale Beach. Friends of MODS hosted a luncheon on October 8, 2016 that raised nearly $20,000 to support the Transition to Independent Living program. The program allowed for 12 paid internships for young adults who were mentored by museum staff.
