Museum Programs The Museum implemented: • Ocean Explorers for 40 middle school students • Eight Home School Classes for grades 3-5 ranged from CSI Investigation to the Everglades. • 520 Table talks/informal presentations • Life Science released a sea turtle back in to the wild. • 26 private overnight camp-ins with 1738 attendees and 5 family overnights with 422 attendees • 74 Days of camps with 938 campers • 309 Outreaches • 18 Turtle Walks with 564 attendees • 102 Birthdays with 3,112 attendees • 205 Labs and Demonstrations for 7,367 students • 9 BECON TV live one-hour science lessons broadcast into Broward County Public Schools • Animal encounters • 780 Keller Science Theater Shows • 68 Guest speakers Community Partners/SPECIAL EVENTS Asian Pacific American Heritage Celebration presented by Polynesian Proud featured live music and cultural activities from Hawaii,Tahiti, Samoa, and Japan. Additional presenters included Ronin Taiko Japanese Drums and a Kimono fashion show by Hiromi Asai, designer and kimono stylist. IKEA presented the annual Design Squad Build It Challenge and provided furnishings for a visitor rest area in the Rose Miniaci Beacon of Discovery on the Museum’s second floor and furnished the program staff area. Homestead- Miami Speedway and the Museum teamed up to host NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin for a day of fun and engaging activities with students on the solar-powered car team from Western High School. Kids Love & Family Expo featured vendors, activities, shows and celebrities. Jim and Lisa Dobson donated five large-format black and white photographs by Clyde Butcher, a nationally recognized conservationist. During this permanent exhibit’s opening weekend, Clyde Butcher greeted Museum guests and Biscayne National Park Rangers conducted presentations. Butcher’s appearance was funded in part by Visit Florida. During a camp walkabout Museum Ocean Explorers found an exhausted raccoon on the beach. They worked together to create a shaded area for the nocturnal creature until the rescue team arrived.
