M A J O R M I L E S T O N E S 1977 The Discovery Center opens in the New River Inn as a hands-on museum of art, science and history. 1986 New Museum Campaign kicks off and generates $33 million, funding the Museum of Discovery and Science and Blockbuster IMAX Theater, and a $3 Million permanent endowment. November 21, 1992 Museum of Discovery and Science and IMAX Theater open on time, on budget, and without capital debt. 2007 The IMAX 3D Theater was renamed the AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater in recognition of a major gift. 2008 The Bank of America Visitor Services Pavilion is completed and the front entrance to Museum is designated as the JM Family Great Hall of Science. 2010 Powerful You! Exhibit presented by Broward Health opens on the second floor. November 11, 2011 The EcoDiscovery Center opens, the first phase of the $35 million expansion and renovation. This 34,000-square-foot wing effectively doubled the Museum’s public space. Exhibits include Everglades Airboat Adventure, Storm Center, Otters at Play, Florida Water Story, Prehistoric Florida, and an expanded traveling exhibition hall. The Keller Science Theater and the Mangurian Lifelong Learning Center with four classrooms enhance the Museum’s ability to deliver innovative programs. At the same time, new exhibits installed within the Museum’s original architectural footprint include Go Green and Aviation Station. September 9, 2014 The AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater undergoes a complete renovation that included a new 60’ x 80’ giant screen, powerful sound system and the addition of a digital projection system. December 19, 2014 The renovation of the aviation hall, renamed To Fly and made possible by the Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust, included new exhibits, flight simulators and a state-of-the-art 7D capsule theater. September 2016 IMAX with Laser 4K projection system was installed utilizing a laser light engine and featuring IMAX’s next generation 12-channel sound system with 114 speakers providing 52,000 watts of digital sound. The AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater is one of only three Certified Giant Screens® in Florida. November 2017 A 27,000-square-foot Science Park is under construction on Museum property facing Broward Boulevard and is scheduled to open spring of 2018.
