Your students can experience science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in a dynamic way at the Museum of Discovery and Science. The Museum provides an interactive learning environment with our permanent and traveling exhibits, enhanced by integrating an IMAX film, lab, or demonstration. Following are just a few suggestions of how to maximize experiential learning this year: Dream Big 3D is a good example of a fully integrated STEM experience. The film features heart warming stories of engineers who are pushing the limits of ingenuity and innovation in unexpected, amazing and forward-thinking ways. The film’s educator resources include short videos and 30 multidisciplinary activities for students in grades K–12, written to meet Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as well as common state science objectives. Each lesson presents students with an engineering challenge inspired by the work of real engineers and can be used to introduce the engineering mindset to the classroom or to your home. Adding a lab or demo on force and energy or roller coaster physics, or an Engineering Challenge to your field trip is a perfect way to enhance your students’ learning opportunities. The Amazing Butterflies maze exhibit paired with the exceptional IMAX film, Amazon Adventure 3D, creates a compelling experience. The film offers extensive educational resources, which relate to the key scientific topics in the film such as camouflage, mimicry, and natural selection. Our labs and demonstrations also highlight these science topics: Animal Ambassadors • Amazing Butterflies • Endangered Everglades • Fur, Scales & Tails • Arthropod Adventure • Amazon Adventures. Learning can continue into your classroom with an outreach program featuring topics ranging from Crazy Chemistry to Amusement Park Engineers to a portable 17-foot planetarium with eight exciting shows that revolve around the universe. Another great way to bring parents, teachers and students together is a Family Science Night led by a museum educator. The Museum of Discovery and Science and AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater is ready to be your extended classroom this year. Use it to support existing curriculum and to open new vistas for exploration.
