Practical Application Water refracts light, creating a lens-like effect that makes objects look closer than they are. This is why fish appear bigger than they really are underwater. Real World Examples Optics are utilized in telescopes, eye glasses, cameras, video projectors and microscopes. Challenge Yourself Create white light by trimming the edge off of a white paper plate. Divide the circle into six equal sections. Using crayons, color each section a different color of the rainbow. Making sure you have color side up, stick a push pin into the center of the circle and into the top of an eraser. Spin the circle and watch white light appear. Rainbows are full circles but we only see arcs because the horizon obscures the bottom part of the circle. Did You Know ? AT HOME EXPERIMENT Exhibit Key Concept Optics Kaleidoscopes
