2016 was the new 40! The history of the Museum of Discovery and Scie e nc now extends back 40 years to its original incorporation in 1976. It was initially configured a a “hands-on museum of art, science and history”, and opened in 1977 as The Discovery Center, located in historic buildings - the New River Inn an King Cromartie House. But within a decade, community demand and a burgeoning realization of the importance of science education triggered a campaign to build a major science center. The “new” Museum of Discovery and Science and Blockbuster IMAX Theater opened in 1992. The theater was renamed the AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater in 2007 in recognition of a major gift.
